Sunday Message for 7 February 2021: “Faith Doctor”

Mark 1:29-39 reveals healing verses. Jesus accompanied two sets of brothers (Simon & Andrew, James & John) as the five men visited Simon’s house, where they found Simon’s mother-in-law feverish. Jesus healed her, and then Jesus continued his role as faith doctor as he spent the rest of the day healing the sick and demon possessed.

After hectic visits with all the ill people Jesus got up before sunrise the next day and went to a deserted place to meditate. An interesting question arises: Does God get tired? Perhaps one of the lessons here is that even Jesus needed a rest given all the energy that he had expended.

Jesus didn’t simply preach about healing and restoration he did something about it by direct intervention. As to the evil spirits Jesus encountered, there’s constant argument about the literal reality of demon possession and whether such maladies are psychiatric or spiritual (or some combination). People can fault evil spirits or chronic depression because either can make for a bad life. Evil spirits or not, many people face the symbolic demons of faulty thinking, substance abuse, and other problems that hinder their spiritual development. The good news is that Jesus can heal all sorts of illnesses.

Jesus healed persons afflicted with leprosy and other profoundly physical issues. Life is significantly defined by the material aspect of existence and it is no wonder that everyone eventually experiences some illness and trauma. Whether the problem is a disease, accidental or deliberate wounds, or simply aging, there will always be challenges.

Our task amid threats to our health and happiness is to overcome whatever restrains us from a life of holistic wellbeing. Have you ever had an impediment to your spiritual, emotional, or physical health? Is there anything interfering with your relationship with the Almighty? Take comfort in knowing that God can help as you do your part. It isn’t easy to admit a problem, yet blaming or shaming don’t solve the underlying issues. When afflicted in mind, body or spirit you can seek God, who is the ultimate solution to what ails you.

Jesus encouraged people by teaching principles and he healed them of their afflictions. Many folks who’ve had a serious medical issue can feel a double blessing when a doctor can both diagnose and treat them successfully. In Jesus’ role as a faith doctor he offers forgiveness first and foremost for the deadly condition of soul sickness. Even when physical problems remain, mere disease needn’t infect your soul. Bodies are mortal and each of us will succumb to illness, accident, or we will simply wear out. Nonetheless, the healing that God provides transcends mortal flaws and ensures eternal spiritual health.

Has life given you a fever? Perhaps you are ready to call upon God as your soul doctor. Don’t give up on the power of prayer to begin the healing process. You may need to use a telephone to call your earthly doctor but God is no more than a though away. The healing process involves many things, including staying positive, and doing your part to live well. All of God’s blessings upon you as you seek wellness in 2021 and beyond.  –Reverend Larry Hoxey
